In order to safeguard protected areas that span vast areas from threats of encroachment, poaching, and fire it is necessary to engage with new technology which has been developed specifically for this purpose. The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) has adopted new technology to monitor protected areas by purchasing four drones.
In order to assist DWNP officers to improve their ability to handle the new equipment purchased, the PA Financing Project has supported two training activities. Basic Drone Training held in Paya Indah Wetlands from 4 – 10 October 2015, and advanced training in the field was conducted from 10 – 19 February 2016 at Taman Negara Kelantan, Krau Wildlife Reserve, and Tasik Bera Pahang.
This supplementary training is enabling officers and rangers to enhance their skills at strategically capturing footage and utilizing these images for surveillance and monitoring for effective PA management.
