AREAS OF WORK
Enlarging resources for PAs
Among the objectives of the PA Financing Project is to expand and diversify funding for PA management in Malaysia. The Project will explore sustainable financing initiatives to enable PA agencies to diversify their income streams and resources beyond government inputs alone
Enhancing PA Management
Three focal sites in Peninsular Malaysia are being assisted in developing Management and Business Plans that address their specific management needs and challenges while establishing systems consistent with international Best Practice. The PAs are expected to be equipped for greater long term financial sustainability and may potentially serve as models that can be emulated by other PAs within the national PA network.
The Project aims to strengthen both technical and institutional capacities within agencies responsible for PA management. It will provide opportunities for specialized training and skills development both locally and abroad, and assist in transforming the Institute of Biodiversity into a PA Centre of Excellence able to serve all PAs throughout Malaysia.
Promoting awareness of PAs
Cultivating greater awareness and appreciation of Malaysia’s protected areas among decision makers and all sectors of society can influence the value people place on protected areas and the irreplaceable biodiversity and natural habitats contained within them. The Project aims to enhance understanding of the inherent value of Malaysia’s protected areas as well as the myriad ways they contribute to our well-being through ecosystem services, and supporting livelihoods.
